Interview #11 - Neil Patel - QuickSprout.com
Neil Patel seems as though he has his hands in everything. From Pronet Advertising to ACS Social Media Optimization Agency to QuickSprout to CrazyEgg to full-time college student, he really is everywhere. Here are his thoughts on personal branding:
1. For those of us who are unfamiliar with you, could you briefly describe who you are and what you do?
I am a 22 year old kid who is currently in college and runs his own business. During the day I am an Internet marketer and during the night I am a college student.
2. What is the number one reason someone should start building their personal brand today?
The later you start the hard or more competitive it is going to be. If you want to build up a brand you need to start now because it may take months if not years before you see great results.
3. What have you learned so far that you wish you knew about branding yourself when you first started out?
The best way to brand yourself is to help others.
4. Is having a blog the most important thing in building your personal brand? If not, what is?
It is because a blog can gain you thousands of fans. The more people that know about you in a positive way, the better.
5. How important is it to be a true expert in your niche?
Very important and you should never try to brand yourself in anything unless you truly are an expert. People can sense bullshit so you need to really know your stuff.
6. For someone who may not consider themselves an expert yet, what should they be doing right now to start establishing their brand?
Help out other people. There is no better way to brand yourself for the Average Joe, than to provide value to others for FREE.
7. You recently posted an article on attending conferences. In your opinion, is it more important to engage in after hour one-on-one conversations or contribute during organized sessions?
It is important to do both. You need to socialize and get to know people in both a group environment and on an individual basis.
8. What is the most important ingredient in your “rock star formula”?
Being humble is a key aspect to becoming a rock star. Arrogance will not get you too far.
Thanks Neil!

Neil is very bright and shares a lot of good insight into the world of personal branding. He is even a contributor to my new magazine, Personal Branding Magazine.
I think the best point he mentions is that you need to act now.

Eh, personally Neil’s greatest value is to show people that “personal branding” and the route to “brand: Expert” is by helping people.
More people should have a gracious, humble, practical, and yes, actionable attitude about their personal brands.
What a country we’d finally be — and need to become - fast.

In a recent article in the Wall Street Journal that I wrote about on my blog it shared that parents are paying money for consultant to select baby names so that they can do everything they can to position them for success. Certain names don’t pass the “Google Test” and studies are done regarding which names seem to resonate with certain circles. Amazing. So yes, it is important to get started early….but how early??
